At first, the offer of this commission pricked my strong aversion to storytelling, yet it also incited my occasional lack of caution about the danger of cliches...so seemed sufficiently interesting and risky to work on.

Charlie Smithgall, then owner of WCNN radio, wanted to show his appreciation to Ted Turner for a contract for the rights to broadcast the Atlanta Braves. With no other guidance for me than to relate to the game, he asked me to design this gift.  

I decided my starting point would be the double-play; when the second baseman, suspended in air after the slide at second, turns to throw to first. The slide is low, from the right; the leap up and away; the redirection back against the grain.

It was the only event I knew in the game that layered so many actions onto one flashing moment; completion and anticipation, release and refocus, one on the other, with all the vectors and energies bypassing each other, cantilevered, as I put it, on a single point.
